NSS

What does NSS stand for in messages and online?

No s*** Sherlock

Censored

NSS is a sarcastic way of saying, "thanks, I know," when someone states something so mind-numbingly obvious that it doesn't need to be said at all. You will likely see NSS in messages and online, especially on social media, where people say many unnecessarily unintelligent things.

For example, if someone messages you, "If you didn't leave the laptop outside in the rain, it'd still be working," you might reply with, "NSS." Or, if an influencer tries to share a helpful hack that most people already know, a TikTok user may reply with "nss, everyone does it that way."

Origin of NSS

The acronym "NSS" originates from the "no s***, Sherlock" phrase, which itself dates back to at least the 1980s (even appears in the 1986 movie Little Shop of Horrors). The "Sherlock" part comes from the fictional literary detective Sherlock Holmes character created by Arthur Conan Doyle.
