MIPS

What does MIPS stand for in computing?

Millions of Instructions Per Second

MIPS is a metric used to measure raw computing speed, representing a computer's performance capabilities. However, MIPS does not take into account several factors (such as how complex the instructions are, what the computer's I/O speed is, etc.). Therefore, people use Megahertz and Gigahertz more commonly.

Before being replaced, MIPS was an essential metric for computer users to consider when determining computing costs, like server performance. However, as technology progressed and the need for more accurate metrics increased, MIPS became an obscure technical term.
